PLEASE RISE TO FOR PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE.
THANK YOU. I WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME EVERYONE TO THE OCTOBER 24TH, 2023 WORK SESSION OF THE SOMERSET COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS.
ROLL CALL, COMMISSIONER DRAKE.
LAST WEEK WE HAD OUR DIVERSITY FESTIVAL.
IT WAS A HAD A REALLY GOOD ATTENDANCE, A LOT OF VENDORS.
I THINK EVERYONE HAD A GOOD TIME.
WE'RE GOING TO BE HONORING THE EMPLOYEES WHO HELPED PUT THAT TOGETHER SHORTLY.
I WAS THERE ALONG WITH COMMISSIONER MELONIE MARANO PAUL DRAKE.
IN 2021, WE EXPANDED OUR RECREATION GRANT PROGRAM TO INCLUDE THE DEVELOPMENT UPGRADE OF ALL FORMS OF ACTIVE AND PASSIVE RECREATIONAL FACILITIES A ND SO FAR, 12 GRANTS HAVE BEEN AWARDED TO 12 MUNICIPALITIES.
EVERYTHING FROM TRAILS TO PLAYGROUNDS, COMMUNITY GARDENS AND PICKLEBALL COURTS.
SO THIS IS A PROGRAM THAT WE'RE REALLY PROUD OF.
WE WERE HONORING OUR VOLUNTEERS THAT HELPED TO KEEP OUR SIX SENIOR CENTERS RUNNING.
SO AGAIN, I WANT TO THANK ALL OF THEM FOR ALL THE GOOD WORK THEY DO.
THE GREATER RARITAN WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT BOARD'S ONE STOP CAREER CENTER IS HAVING A CAREER CAFÉ ON OCTOBER 27TH. IF YOU ARE A JOB SEEKER, COMMUNITY OR FAITH BASED ORGANIZATION, ONE-STOP OR WORKFORCE PARTNER, PLEASE JOIN THEM FOR COFFEE, COOKIES, AND A CASUAL CONVERSATION ABOUT THEIR MENU OF SERVICES.
THIS AGAIN IS GOING TO BE ON OCTOBER 27TH FROM 2 TO 4 P.M.
AT THE ONE STOP CAREER TRAINING CENTER, 27 WARREN STREET.
AND I'M ALSO PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT WE HAVE THAT RVCC HAS TEAMED UP WITH FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP FOR A SATELLITE TRAINING PROGRAM TO HELP BETTER SERVE THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP.
THE FOCUS IS GOING TO BE ON ADVANCED MANUFACTURING.
SO THIS IS SOMETHING I'VE BEEN WORKING ON WITH THE DEPUTY MAYOR [INAUDIBLE] IN FRANKLIN.
SO I'M VERY PLEASED THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE UP AND RUNNING STARTING ON DECEMBER 1ST.
SO WE'RE HOPING THAT THIS WILL THIS WILL SOMETHING WE CAN GRADUALLY EXPAND OVER TIME.
NEW JERSEY'S CRISIS, DOES CENTRAL JERSEY EVEN EXIST.
AND THERE'S A VERY NICE PHOTO FEATURING OUR VERY OWN BRAD FEY AND SENATOR ANDREW ZWICKER.
SO THAT IS IN TODAY'S WALL STREET JOURNAL.
[00:05:04]
AND THAT'S ALL I HAVE FOR NOW.THANKS. SO OVER IN WATCHUNG WE ACTUALLY HAVE OUR TENNIS COURTS OPEN, BUT PART OF IT IS ACTUALLY NOW TAKEN OVER BY PICKLEBALL, SO IT'S SPREADING THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY.
LUCKILY, THE WEATHER HELD OUT, SO WE'RE VERY GRATEFUL FOR THAT.
AND THERE WAS JUST INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCES, TWO STAGES, FOOD TRUCKS, AND A GOOD AMOUNT OF ATTENDEES.
ON SATURDAY, WE HAD THE FAR HILLS RACES, MORE COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE HUN.
SO THAT WAS A SUCCESS ULTIMATELY AND CAN'T COMPLAIN ABOUT A GOOD DAY.
AND FOR THE COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN.
IT IS GOING TO BE ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11TH FROM 9 TO 11 A.M.
AT THE ELKS LODGE OVER IN BRIDGEWATER.
WE HAVE OUR VERY OWN KEYNOTE SPEAKER, COLLEEN MAHR, AS A POWERHOUSE TO REPRESENT WOMEN THAT ARE DOING EXACTLY WHAT WE WANT MORE PEOPLE TO EMULATE OVER AT RARITAN VALLEY.
AND THIS IS EXACTLY WHY WE ARE RAISING FUNDS FOR THAT.
SO THE TICKETS START AT $65 PER HEAD.
WE DO ENCOURAGE HEAVIER DONATIONS, AS EVERY DOLLAR DOES COUNT FOR OUR STUDENTS THAT ARE WORKING MANY JOBS JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY CAN ACCOMPLISH AS MUCH AS THEY CAN AT A SCALABLE AND AFFORDABLE LEVEL.
AND MY LAST REMINDER IS THAT VOTE BY MAIL'S ARE OUT.
SO PLEASE, WE ENCOURAGE EVERY PERSON TO COME OUT AND VOTE.
AND YOU DON'T ACTUALLY HAVE TO COME OUT ANYMORE IN PERSON.
AND YOU CAN DO THAT AT THE COMFORT OF YOUR OWN HOME IF YOU OPTED IN FOR THAT.
AND IF YOU'D LIKE TO FOR NEXT TIME, PLEASE SEE OUR COUNTY CLERK.
AND THERE WAS ALWAYS SOME PLACE TO TURN TO GO SEE SOMETHING NEW ON THE STAGE.
SO AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR EFFORTS.
I KNOW THIS IS A BIG TEAM EFFORT, SO THANK YOU.
WE WERE HAPPY TO HAVE MANY MEMBERS FROM OUR PLANNING DIVISION, OUR OPEN SPACE TEAM, OUR CULTURAL HERITAGE TEAM COME OUT FOR THE RIBBON CUTTING OF THE WARREN PAVILION.
SO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE STAFF FOR BEING THERE.
LET'S SEE, WE'VE GOT SOME UPCOMING EVENTS.
THIS SATURDAY IS OUR BIG SYMPOSIUM IN BRIDGEWATER FOR THE I'M SORRY AT RVCC FOR TO DISCUSS THE MIDDLEBROOK ENCAMPMENTS HERE IN SOMERSET COUNTY.
SO THERE IS STILL TIME TO REGISTER FOR THAT.
I THINK WE HAVE CLOSE TO 100 PEOPLE SIGNED UP SO FAR.
THIS IS VERY EXCITING EVENT COMING ON SATURDAY.
BUT BEFORE THAT THURSDAY, CULTURAL AND HERITAGE IS BUSY AGAIN AT THE SZYMANSKI THEATER IN BERNARDS TOWNSHIP FOR THE EXCELLENCE IN THE ARTS AWARDS THAT WILL BE TAKING PLACE THERE ON THIS THURSDAY.
SO AS A REMINDER, THIS SATURDAY THE 28TH THROUGH THE FOLLOWING SUNDAY, A TEN DAY PERIOD WE WILL HAVE EARLY VOTING AT, I BELIEVE IT'S 5 OR 6 LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT SOMERSET COUNTY.
OUR SENIOR AND DISABLED ADVISORY BOARD MET.
[00:10:02]
SO THAT'S BEEN VERY SUCCESSFUL.WE'VE ALSO MET WITH SOME FOLKS FROM OFFICE ON AGING TO TALK ABOUT GETTING THE WORD OUT.
OUR LGBT ADVISORY BOARD MET AS WELL.
WE'RE DISCUSSING TAKING THE TRIP ON THE ROAD, OUR SHOW ON THE ROAD, AND EVERY OTHER MEETING, HOSTING IT IN PERSON IN DIFFERENT LOCATIONS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTY. OUR FIRST MEETING IN PERSON, WE ARE TRYING TO WORK ON THE LOGISTICS IN THE JANUARY MEETING TO MEET AT COMMUNITIES.
THEY JUST CHANGED THEIR NAME COMMUNITIES IN CONNECTION UP IN BERNARDSVILLE THAT HAS A BUILDING UP THERE WITH A FOCUS TO TALK ABOUT RECOVERY, ESPECIALLY DESIGNED FOR THE LGBT COMMUNITY FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE RECOVERY.
SO MORE TO COME ON THAT, BUT LOOKING FORWARD TO THOSE EXTERNAL MEETINGS THERE.
AND JUST A LITTLE WORD ABOUT OUR LIBRARY IN BOUND BROOK.
THERE HAVE BEEN SOME STRUCTURAL ISSUES FOUND IN THE LIBRARY IN BOUND BROOK IT IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED.
THE LIBRARY IS IN ACTIVE DISCUSSIONS RIGHT NOW FOR A TEMPORARY SPACE TO BE USED FOR THE BOROUGH, SO MORE TO COME ON THAT ONCE PAPERWORK IS SIGNED, WE CAN MAKE THAT FORMAL ANNOUNCEMENT AS TO WHERE THAT TEMPORARY SPACE WILL BE HELD.
THANK YOU, COMMISSIONER. YEAH.
LAST LAST THURSDAY, COMMISSIONER.
WE BOTH ATTENDED THE, SINGLETERRY ATTENDED THE MEETING WITH VICTOR LOPEZ, WHO WILL BE OUR COMMUNITY POLICE ALLIANCE COORDINATOR IN BOUND BROOK IT WAS A GREAT EVENT.
WE WE REALLY TALKED ABOUT HOW THE SUCCESS OF THE PROGRAM HAS EVOLVED FROM OUR ORIGINALLY AS A PILOT PROGRAM WITH BRIDGEWATER TOWNSHIP AND THE HIRING OF DAMIEN STACKHOUSE, WHO HAS DONE AN EXEMPLARY JOB WORKING CLOSELY WITH THE POLICE DEPARTMENT IN BRIDGEWATER, AND THAT THAT KIND OF ALLOWED US TO CONTINUE THAT SUCCESS AND BUILD ON IT.
THE CHIEF WAS THERE, SEVERAL COUNCIL MEMBERS WERE THERE.
AND SO IT WAS REALLY A NICE EVENT TO REALLY CELEBRATE THAT SUCCESS OF THAT ORIGINAL PILOT PROGRAM, BUT THEN ULTIMATELY DEVELOPED INTO A MORE FORMAL POSITION AND OBVIOUSLY MORE TO COME ON THAT.
WE'RE LOOKING AT ADDITIONAL COMMUNITIES AS WELL TO SORT OF BUILD ON THAT SUCCESS.
WE WANT TO REALIZE THAT SOMERSET COUNTY HAS SIX INCREDIBLE SENIOR CENTERS, THAT WE PROVIDE SERVICES TO OUR SENIORS THROUGHOUT SOMERSET COUNTY, AND THE FOLKS THAT WORK IN THOSE SENIOR CENTERS NOT ONLY ARE SUPPORTED, BUT ARE REALLY DEPENDENT UPON THE VOLUNTEERS THAT ALSO PROVIDE SERVICES TO OUR SENIORS.
AND SO WE BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER FOR A BREAKFAST TO SORT OF THANK THEM FOR NOT ONLY THEIR VOLUNTEER SERVICE, BUT ULTIMATELY TO RECOGNIZE THE VALUE THAT THESE THESE PROVIDE TO OUR COMMUNITY IN SOMERSET COUNTY.
AND THEN ALSO, I WANT A BIG SHOUT OUT TO THE NEW JERSEY WATER SUPPLY AUTHORITY.
SO THIS WILL GO TOWARDS HELP REPLANTING NEW TREES ALONG THE RIVER ON THE RARITAN RIVER.
AND SO WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THAT.
AND THEN FINALLY, THE HOUSING RESOURCE TRAINING CENTER IS PROVIDING HOMEBUYER EDUCATION TRAINING ON NOVEMBER 14TH AND 16TH FROM 5:30 TO 8:00 P.M..
AND YOU CAN REGISTER FOR THAT TRAINING.
WHAT'S NICE ABOUT THAT IS YOU ACTUALLY GET A CERTIFICATE FROM THAT, WHICH WILL THEN ALLOW YOU TO GO TO YOUR BANKS AND AT LEAST ANTICIPATED RECEIVING LOWER MORTGAGE RATES BECAUSE YOU'VE ATTENDED THIS TRAINING, BUT YOU HAVE TO ATTEND BOTH TRAINING SESSIONS IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THAT CERTIFICATE.
AND THE CLASSES ARE GOING TO BE ONLINE, BUT YOU REGISTER ON THE COUNTY WEBSITE AND HOPEFULLY THAT'LL HELP PEOPLE LOOK AT HOUSING AND BE ABLE TO BE MORE AFFORDABLE FOR THEM.
SO I THINK THAT'S THE END OF MY REPORT.
SURE. SO GOOD EVENING AND AND WELCOME.
[00:15:03]
WE WANT TO RECOGNIZE A GROUP OF DIVERSE EMPLOYEES WHO ARE ACTUALLY THE BACKBONE AND THE ORGANIZERS OF THE RECENT SOMERSET COUNTY DIVERSITY FESTIVAL, AND IT WAS A TEAM EFFORT.AND AS THEY MAKE THEIR WAY FORWARD, WE WANT TO THANK THEM FOR COMING HERE AFTER WORK.
WE KNOW THAT YOU PUT IN A FULL DAY WORKING ON BEHALF OF THE COUNTY RESIDENTS, BUT WHAT YOU ALSO DO IN RESPECT TO THIS DAY HAS TAKEN MONTHS TO GET HERE. SO WE'RE VERY PROUD OF YOU AND WE JUST WANT TO PUBLICLY THANK YOU.
WHAT I WANT TO EMPHASIZE, HOWEVER, IS THAT WHAT YOU ALREADY SAID ABOUT THE GREAT WEATHER AND THE FACT THAT THE FESTIVAL WAS BIGGER THIS YEAR AND BETTER THAN IT HAS BEEN IN THE PAST, AND THAT WE HAD GREAT ENTERTAINMENT AND LOTS OF THINGS FOR FAMILIES AND CHILDREN TO ENJOY.
THERE ARE, I WOULD SAY, BETWEEN 10 AND 12 PEOPLE WHO BEGIN THE PLANNING PROCESS IN FEBRUARY.
AND SO WE START WORKING WELL BEFORE THE FESTIVAL IS ON ANYONE ELSE'S MIND.
WE GET SUPPORT FROM ALL THE COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS THAT YOU SAW THERE.
EVEN COUNTY EMPLOYEES WHO ARE NOT PART OF THE PLANNING TEAM KNOW THAT SOME OF US ARE WORKING VERY HARD ON THE FESTIVAL, AND THEY LEND THEIR SUPPORT EITHER BY REACHING OUT OR BY SAYING, I'M NOT GOING TO UNTIL TUESDAY.
AND OF COURSE, THE COMMISSIONERS AND OUR ADMINISTRATION.
AND WHAT I ALSO WANT TO SAY, I WANT, I WANT TO SAY TO THE PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN SOMERSET COUNTY THAT WE REALLY ARE LEADING THROUGH DIVERSITY HERE.
AND WHEN I SAY THAT, WHAT IT MEANS TO ME IS THAT OUR LEADERSHIP IS MORE REPRESENTATIVE OF THE DIVERSE GROUPS OF PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY. AND THAT'S SOMETHING WE PROBABLY I KNOW I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN COMFORTABLE SAYING MAYBE FIVE, TEN YEARS AGO.
AND I ALSO WANT TO SAY THAT WE ARE LEADING IN THE SENSE THAT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT WHAT COUNTY GOVERNMENTS ARE DOING TO ADVANCE THE CAUSES OF DIVERSITY, SOMERSET COUNTY IS OUT FRONT.
WE ARE, TO MY KNOWLEDGE, THE ONLY COUNTY GOVERNMENT THAT HAS A DIVERSITY FESTIVAL.
AND WE ALSO HAVE SEVERAL INTERNAL INITIATIVES FOR EMPLOYEES LIKE EMPLOYEE RESOURCE GROUPS THAT WHILE 90% OF PRIVATE SECTOR CORPORATIONS HAVE THEM.
SO A BIG THANK YOU BACK TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED US PULL THE FESTIVAL OFF.
AND WITH THAT, I'D LIKE TO, IF IT'S OKAY, CALL UP ALL THE OTHERS WHO WORKED WITH US ON THE FESTIVAL.
MOST OF THEM WERE THERE FOR THE ENTIRE NINE MONTHS THAT WE WORKED ON IT.
DO YOU HAVE EVERYBODY'S NAMES? SURE. YEAH.
YEAH, USE THE MIC. WHY DON'T YOU JUST USE THE MIC AND JUST YEAH, THAT WOULD BE GREAT.
