OKAY, SO WE HAVE CARIBBEAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH AND ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY.
[PROCLAMATIONS]
WE HAVE SOMEONE FROM THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY, CARIBBEAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY THAT WILL BE ACCEPTING THIS PROCLAMATION.MIC] AS WE CELEBRATE CARIBBEAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH THERE IS A NEWLY FORMED SOMERSET COUNTY CHAPTER OF CARIBBEAN CONNECTION.
WHEREAS JUNE OF 2024 HAS BEEN DESIGNATED AS CARIBBEAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH BY THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIRST CELEBRATED IN 2005 TO RECOGNIZE THE GREAT CONTRIBUTION OF AMERICANS OF CARIBBEAN DESCENT.
AND WHEREAS CARIBBEAN AMERICANS HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE STRENGTH AND COHESION OF THE UNITED STATES SINCE THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR, AND CONTINUE TO BE VITAL MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITIES TO THIS DAY.
AND WHEREAS THE UNITED STATES HAS MORE THAN 8.5 MILLION RESIDENTS OF CARIBBEAN DESCENT, WITH MORE THAN 20% IN THE STATE OF NEW JERSEY, INCLUDING THOUSANDS WHO CALL SOMERSET COUNTY HOME.
WHEREAS CARIBBEAN AMERICANS BROUGHT AND SHARED THEIR RICH AND DIVERSE CULTURES, CULINARY STYLES, MUSIC AND ARTS, INTELLECTUAL HISTORY, AND MORE TO CONTRIBUTE TO THEIR COMMUNITIES AS ELECTED OFFICIALS, BUSINESS LEADERS, LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS, TEACHERS, ARTISTS, AND MORE. AND WHEREAS, RECOGNIZING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF SUCCESSES OF RESIDENTS OF CARIBBEAN ANCESTRY ENCOURAGES THEIR ONGOING PARTICIPATION AND CONTINUED ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND BENEFITS THE ENTIRE SOMERSET COUNTY COMMUNITY.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, PROCLAIMED THAT THE SOMERSET COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS DOES HEREBY RECOGNIZE JUNE 2024 AS CARIBBEAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH IN THE COUNTY OF SOMERSET AND URGES ALL OF ITS CITIZENS TO BE AWARE OF AND APPLAUD THE CONTRIBUTIONS AND SUCCESSES OF THOSE SHARING CARIBBEAN ANCESTRY, AND IS SIGNED ON THIS DAY BY YOUR FIVE SOMERSET COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS.
[APPLAUSE] I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO THE COMMISSIONERS FOR THIS ACKNOWLEDGMENT.
I DO CHERISH MY CARIBBEAN HERITAGE.
WE ALWAYS SAY ALL WE ARE ONE [APPLAUSE].
SO WE'RE HERE TO COMMEMORATE 2024 WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY.
AND WHEREAS IN IN 2006, THE INTERNATIONAL NETWORK FOR THE PREVENTION OF ELDER ABUSE IN SUPPORT OF THE UNITED NATIONS INTERNATIONAL PLAN OF ACTION, PROCLAIMED A DAY TO RECOGNIZE THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ELDER ABUSE AS A PUBLIC HEALTH AND HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUE.
AND WHEREAS ELDER ABUSE COMES IN MANY FORMS, INCLUDING PHYSICAL OR EMOTIONAL ABUSE AND NEGLECT, SEXUAL VIOLENCE OR FINANCIAL EXPLOITATION, AND WHEREAS THESE AND OTHER ABUSES CAN LEAVE OLDER AMERICANS WITH SCARS, BOTH VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE, THAT IMPACTS THEM FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIVES.
AND WHEREAS THESE AND OTHER ABUSES CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE AT HOME, AT A CARE FACILITY, AT WORK OR ONLINE, AND WHEREAS IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT ALL OF US RECOGNIZE THE THREATS OF ELDER ABUSE AND EDUCATE OURSELVES TO RECOGNIZE WHEN IT OCCURS AND LEARN HOW TO SPEAK OUT AGAINST IT AND REPORT IT TO THE PROPER AUTHORITIES.
AND WHEREAS SOMERSET COUNTY WORKS TO PREVENT ABUSE OF OLDER ADULTS THROUGH ITS ACTIVE ADULT PROTECTIVE SERVICES UNIT AND BY MAINTAINING AND IMPROVING SOCIAL SUPPORTS LIKE SENIOR CENTERS, HUMAN SERVICES AND COUNSELING TRANSPORTATION PROGRAMS THAT ALLOW SOMERSET COUNTY RESIDENTS TO CONTINUE TO LIVE AS INDEPENDENTLY AS POSSIBLE AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE LIFE AND VIBRANCY OF OUR COMMUNITIES.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED THAT SOMERSET COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS DOES HEREBY DECLARE JUNE 15TH, 2024 AS ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY AND ENCOURAGE ALL RESIDENTS TO JOIN IN STANDING WITH ELDER ABUSE SURVIVORS, SHEDDING LIGHT ON THIS IMPORTANT ISSUE, AND CREATING A WORLD IN WHICH NO OLDER PERSON HAS TO LIVE IN FEAR OF VIOLENCE, ABUSE OR NEGLECT AND IT'S SIGNED BY THE FIVE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS.WE NOW MOVE ON TO OUR CONSENT AGENDA.
